Climate Change and Forests: Effects and Repercussions

Climate change is a slow burn catastrophic event that is happening at this very instance. Various countries are continuing to work together to find a solution and avoid possible species extinction. The United Nations has also included this problem to their Sustainable Development Goals. Climate change covers Goal 13 which is to “take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts”.

According to the data of the United Nations, there are 125 developing countries out of 154 that are formulating and implementing national climate adaptation plans. This means that majority of countries are taking matters of the effects brought about by the thinning of the ozone layer seriously.

In addition, it is also important to take note that climate change not only affects our oceans but even our lands especially the forests. With this, how does climate change affect forests?

  1. DroughtWith the temperature of the Earth warming up, drought is surely to be a part of the picture. Unfortunately, droughts have become more intense and more severe throughout the years. Because of this, the trees in the forest are slowly drying up and are dying. This can lead to more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which could became a catalyst in the temperature increasing more.

  2. Forest FireForest fires are slowly becoming a usual yearly scenario during summers in places like California and Australia. These fires have brought impacts on the health of people, the death of a lot of species, and loss of homes. Unfortunately, this will continually happen due to climate change bringing hotter temperatures and more droughts. Sad to say that more people will most likely lose their homes and their lives if the root of the problem does not get fixed soon.

  3. PestsForests usually have very few pests. Unfortunately, because of drought, trees are becoming more susceptible to pests. This means that the population of these pests may increase and cause distress to the ecosystem.
